Historic Downtown LaPorte has gone through great transformation throughout its history. What was once a destination for major retail shopping in the region with such names as JCPenney, Levine’s Boston Store, and Woolworth, has now developed into a quaint, diversified destination with specialty shops, good food, and the arts. The additions of the Thaddeus C. Gallery and the LaPorte Symphony Orchestra Gallery have added a nice cultural boost to the area. Enzo’s, Reed’s State Street Pub, and B& J’s American Café are just a sample of the great food, good prices, and the wonderful social atmosphere. There are many specialty shops that feature items such as antiques, clothing, jewelry, and furniture to satisfy the shopping bug in all of us. LR Clothier, Hilbish Drug Store, the Gift Box, and Toy Parade are just a few stops you should make along the way.
The Historic Downtown LaPorte is also host to the County Seat. The LaPorte County Courthouse acts as the centerpiece of downtown, and was beautifully restored in 2006-2007. Just down the street is LaPorte City Hall which occupies the original post office building. The YMCA, LaPorte County Public Library, and the former train depot, currently being renovated to become the home of the Chamber of Commerce and GLEDC, are all within walking distance downtown. There are many buildings throughout the downtown area with historic architecture and long histories making downtown LaPorte what it is today. LaPorte would love to add your business to the mix.
